Obtaining Obsidian Ingots
Obsidian Ingots are obtained by blasting Obsidian in a Blast Furnace.
Progression
The mod replaces the vanilla Diamond → Netherite path with a three-step progression:
- Diamond gear (crafted normally in vanilla)
- Obsidian gear (upgraded from Diamond at a Smithing Table)
- Netherite gear (upgraded from Obsidian at a Smithing Table)
Both upgrade steps are done at the Smithing Table. Diamond gear cannot be crafted directly into Obsidian, and Obsidian gear can no longer be crafted from ingots directly, the Smithing Template is the only path.
Obsidian Upgrade Smithing Template
To upgrade Diamond gear to Obsidian, you need the Obsidian Upgrade Smithing Template. It is found as loot in the following chests:

The template can be duplicated in a Crafting Table using 7 Diamonds + 1 Obsidian + 1 Obsidian Upgrade Smithing Template, yielding 2 templates.
Upgrading at the Smithing Table
The vanilla Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template now applies to Obsidian Equipment instead of Diamond Equipment. Its tooltip has been updated to reflect this.
Horse Armor
Obsidian Horse Armor cannot be crafted or upgraded — it can only be found as rare loot in a Nether Fortress, as Bastion Treasure, and Ruined Portal chests (18% chance).
Spear (1.21.11+)
The Obsidian Spear is obtained by upgrading a Diamond Spear at the Smithing Table using the Obsidian Upgrade Smithing Template and an Obsidian Ingot. It sits between Diamond and Netherite in charge damage, knockback, and swing speed.
Nautilus Armor (1.21.11+)
Obsidian Nautilus Armor is rare loot found in Shipwreck Supply chests, Ocean Ruin chests, and Buried Treasure. It provides 15 body armor points (Diamond: 11, Netherite: 19).
Obsidian Nautilus Armor replaces Diamond as the base for upgrading to Netherite Nautilus Armor at the Smithing Table. It can also be smelted down into an Obsidian Ingot.
